I love the idea and concept of working with parts, I believe it helps us to manage them, it helps us to understand them, and it helps to demystify the whole process of what’s going on up there in our mind.
We are made up of many different parts, parts that have been constructed at various times in our lives, depending what was going on. These parts or ego states are real, whether they appear as voices, images or as different ages and stages of our lives. Metaphor is a good way to get to know them, for example asking the client to say what they would look like it they could see them.
At the beginning of therapy it’s imperative to get to know them and understand who or which part you are working with. A useful exercise to try is to draw a circle and name parts of yourself around the circle. Liking it to a conference table, but equally you could be meeting at the beach.
